How to Care for Your BUGSnSTUFF
Giant African Millipede (Archispiros streptus)
We always appreciate it
when folks who own a BUGSnSTUFF BUG-Pet treat it with respect, so here are some
guidelines for caring for your new pet:
P
The soil,
mulch, dirt or other bedding in the cage should be a little moist, but not real
wet. It is all right if it gets dry on the surface. Your Millipede will find a
place where it is comfortable. A nice piece of cork bark (available at many pet
shops) or other bark will help your Millipede find more good places to hang
out. Make its home a nice place to live! And don’t forget… COVER THE
CAGE!
P
Mist the
cage a couple of times a week – once more in the dry winter months – depending
on the soil dampness (remember not too wet!) Use a spray bottle and filtered
tap water or bottled water if possible.
P
You should
keep a small water dish with a sponge in it. Boil the sponge to sterilize it.
You can also use aquarium filter floss (the white cottony stuff in aquarium
filters) – it won’t need to be sterilized or changed often. This will ensure
your Millipede won’t get too thirsty if you cannot always mist the cage. The
sponge or floss will keep it from drowning and will lengthen the time between
adding water.
P
Give your
Millipede regular, filtered sunlight (in a north facing window), or use a Vitalight® or Repti-Sun®
light for 13-15 hour a day. (We use a timer. You can get one at most hardware
stores or Walmart for about $5)
P
P
Giant
African Millipedes can be handled safely. They do secrete a substance when agitated that should not be ingested.
They are delicate, so it is important always to treat them with respect! ALWAYS
wash your hands after handling a BUGSnSTUFF BUG-Pet!
P
If you
can, feed your Millipede a wide variety of uncooked fruits and vegetables.
Change the food regularly or it will grow mold. Include a few pieces of dry cat
or dog food for protein. Place the food on the lid of a small jar or in a
feeding dish (available at most pet shops).
Here are
some foods our Millipedes seem to like (try different things!):
Baby Carrots
Lettuce
Corn
Cucumbers
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Yellow or Green Squash
Apples
Sweet Potatoes
Sectioned bananas with fish food flakes on top
