The beautiful design on this spider's abdomen closely resembles a fleur de lis. This design is common in family crests and shields and so forth. It is supposedly loosely fashioned after a type of iris flower. And in the case of this Orb Weaver Spider (most likely Larinioides cornutus - ID by Joe Lapp - thanks! Photographed at East Harbor State Park July '07) the design on it looks almost exactly like the helmet of the New Orleans Saints NFL Football team!
