The Very Large African Millipede
all images property of BUGMAN Educational Entoprises -- all rights reserved - do not use without permission © 2009

This is the Giant African Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas - depending on whom you ask!) It is a real giant, reaching nearly 12 inches! In this picture you can see its compound eyes. These are not as large as compound eyes in many insects and don't have as many individual eye units. Millipedes are scavengers and eat things they find laying around their habitat - you don't need good eyesight for that! You will notice that its antennas are large and prominent. They smell as their primary sense. It also has four legs on each of its body segment that don't ever total 1000 as its name suggests.
