Guyana Pink Toe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia) This is
BUGMAN'S current favorite spider. They are furry, and beautiful and have a
lot of personality - but the good kind of personality. Pink Toes are
arboreal and so will climb around their cage more than most of the ground
spiders (like the Rose Tarantula). They are a little tricky to handle and
will do little jumps as if from branch to branch. you'll want to be
sitting down the first few times you try so it won't hurt itself if you
don't catch it. They can be quite acrobatic!

Chilean Rose Tarantula (Grammastola rosea) -- If you
are going to start out with a tarantula this is the one to get. Rose
Tarantulas are generally calm enough to handle safely and
respectfully and not get hurt. Rose Tarantulas are beautiful, long-lived and very easy to care for.
They eat live crickets and mealworms and need a water dish - that's about
it!

Tarantulas, like all spiders, can bite. However, short of allergic
reactions, a Rose or Pink-Toe Tarantula bite is quite uncommon and not very
distressful. It feels like a couple of small bee stings. They also can
"throw" the "urticating hairs" on their abdomens. These are minor
irritants and can easily be washed off with warm, soapy water. |
|
Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) -- Many people
are freaked out by scorpions thinking they are all dangerous and will
sting. But these aren't like that - they can be handled fairly safely.
They also look very cool under a blacklight! Emperors will live a couple
years or more in captivity and are very easy to care for.
They eat live crickets and mealworms and need a water dish - that's about
it!
Click here for a Scorpion Care Sheet Scorpions can sting and their sting is venomous. However, short of allergic reactions, an Emperor Scorpion sting is quite uncommon and not very distressful. It feels like a strong bee sting. $21 plus shipping * |

Goliath Birdeater Tarantula (Theraphosa blondi) --
The Goliath is the "biggest spider in the world." These aren't fully
grown, but they are pretty big - most people go "whoa!" They don't like
being handled - this is a show spider. They are large enough and fairly
active and make an impressive display.
