P.R. Mantis Coo-Coo Coco Crunchers This is a quick, fun snack for kids and adults! Crunchy, slightly sweet and light, P.R. Mantis Coco Crunchies are great for tailgating or other parties! INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS: Add coconut oil and orange zest to frying pan and warm over medium-high heat. Carefully add crickets and/or waxworms. If doing both separately, fry the waxworms first as they will leave a more complimentary residue and you won’t have to clean the pan in between. Fry until crispy, stirring constantly so they do not burn. Allow to cool on paper towels to absorb excess oil. then toss in powdered sugar in baggie. Enjoy as a nutritious, delicious finger snack! NOTE: Depending on the size of your group, you can obtain quantities waxworms from many places, including some pet shops and bait stores. A local bait store in Columbus sells 250 waxworms for about $9. To prepare them, separate them as much as possible from their substrate (which is usually a sort of sawdust shavings), and freeze them. After a short time, rinse the waxworms under cool water, drain and use or re-freeze. Unfrozen, dead waxworms do not last long, so freeze them until you are ready to use them and thaw with cool water, if desired – they will cook fine when frozen. |
