The beautiful design on this spider's
abdomen closely resembles a
fleur de lis.
This design is common in family crests and shields and so forth. It is
supposedly loosely fashioned after a type of
iris flower. And in the case of
this Orb Weaver Spider (most likely Neoscona arabesca photographed
at East Harbor State Park July '07) the design on it looks almost exactly like
the helmet of the New
Orleans Saints NFL Football team!
